Discussion with Professor Mike Morgan about the NHS Long Term Plan
Posted on: 10 Jan 2019Bronwen Thompson, PCRS policy advisor, and Professor Mike Morgan, National Clinical Director for Respiratory Disease at NHS England (NHSE), discuss the respiratory long-term plan in the latest version of the Primary Care Respiratory Update (PCRU).
Respiratory disease has just been included within the list of priority disease areas for the NHS long-term plan in England.
It is mentioned that respiratory disease has been a major cause for winter admissions, with patients requiring costly care. Therefore, improving the care of people with respiratory disease could ease the burden on primary care services.
Professor Morgan also highlights the increasing concern within NHS England about inequalities for patients with respiratory disease. For example, the gap in mortality rates between the most deprived and least deprived has increased by 20% in the past 15 years.
